Cleggan / Claddaghduff

Cleggan is a small fishing village, nestling at the head of Cleggan Bay, with the Twelve Bens in the background. This is the port of departure for the Island of Inisbofin.

On Cleggan Hill are the ruins of a tower built in the early nineteenth century as a watch tower to use during the Napoleonic War. The tower itself has been ravished by the wind and weather, but the panoramic views and evening sunsets from this point remain as spectacular as ever. The farm at the foot of the hill has one of the best megalithic tombs in the area.

0mey Island is off the coast of Claddaghduff and can be reached 017 foot or by car at low tide across the lovely sandy beach. Among the sand dunes on the island lie the ruins of a small medieval church, which stands on the site of a monastery founded by St. Feichin, in the seventh century.

Cleggan has always had a long maritime tradition but in 1927, twenty-five Fishermen from surrounding villages were lost at sea when a freak storm blew up. This sad event is locally known as the Cleggan Disaster Because of the peace and beauty of this area, many artists and writers have made their home and found inspiration here, including the poet Richard Murphy who lived for many years in the area.
